Percival Mew Gull |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| The Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF is the last remaining example of the famous facing aeroplanes that participated in the King's Cup in the 1930's. This particular aeroplane is undoubtedly the most famous as it was originally flown from England to Cape Town and back in February 1939 in 4 days, 10 hours and 16 minutes by Alex Henshaw who was the company test pilot responsible to flying over 50% of all the Spitfires leaving the factory during World War II. This aeroplane is capable of a speed of around 240 m.p.h.
This aircraft was retained at Shuttleworth and due to an engine failure was severely damaged. The contract for the rebuild was awarded to us. This necessitated building a completely new wing and tailplane, doing extensive repairs on the fuselage including the manufacture of the original cowlings. The aircraft was finished in the original Racing Cape configuration and is now with The Shuttleworth Trust and is used on a regular basis. |
